मुंबई – ३० वर्षांपासून समाजातील दुर्बल घटकांचे प्रतिनिधित्व करणारे आणि प्रभावी राजकीय व्यक्तिमत्व असलेले विलास रूपवते यांनी कुर्ला-नेहरू नगर (१४५) मतदारसंघातून आगामी विधानसभेच्या निवडणुकीसाठी आपली उमेदवारी मागितली आहे. अनुसूचित जातीसाठी राखीव असलेल्या या मतदारसंघात उद्धव ठाकरे यांच्या नेतृत्वाखालील शिवसेनेच्या (उद्धव गट) तिकीटावर निवडणुकीसाठी त्यांची उमेदवारी देण्याची मागणी करण्यात आली आहे.

रूपवते यांनी समाजातील दलित, आंबेडकरी आणि मुस्लिम समाजाशी प्रगल्भ संबंध ठेवले आहेत आणि या समाजातील अनेक घटक त्यांचे पाठबळ म्हणून उभे राहिले आहेत. हे मतदारसंघ मध्यमवर्गीय आणि मराठा समाजाच्या मतांचे केंद्र असल्यामुळे या निवडणुकीत रूपवते यांना मोठ्या राजकीय पक्षांच्या उमेदवारांशी सामना करावा लागणार आहे.

दुर्बल घटकांच्या हक्कांसाठी लढणारे नेते

विलास रूपवते यांनी २००४ साली राज्यस्तरीय निवडणुकीत बंडखोरी करत मोठ्या राजकीय आव्हानांचा सामना केला होता. त्यानंतरच्या काळात त्यांच्यापुढे अनेक समस्या निर्माण झाल्या असल्या तरी त्यांनी निष्ठेने समाजसेवा करत राहिली. त्यांची महिलांच्या देवदासी समस्यांवरील कामगिरी विशेष उल्लेखनीय आहे. ते या समाजाच्या न्यायासाठी सातत्याने लढा देत आले आहेत. देवदासी महिलांच्या समस्यांवर तोडगा काढण्यासाठी त्यांनी अनेक वर्षे संघर्ष केला आहे.

डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर यांच्या विचारांचे स्मारक

रूपवते यांच्या कुटुंबाने डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर यांच्या विचारांचा वारसा जपण्याचे काम केले आहे. त्यांचे वडील सत्तू रूपवते यांनी बी. आर. आंबेडकर वसाहतीत 'विचारांचे स्मारक' बांधले आहे. हे स्मारक बाबासाहेबांच्या सामाजिक न्यायाच्या विचारांचा प्रतीक आहे, आणि समाजातील नव्या पिढीला प्रेरणा देत आहे.

समाजातील सर्व घटकांसाठी लढणारे नेतृत्व
